Library Student Specialist – How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in working as a Library Student Specialist. We will review applications during our next hiring period or if we have any unexpected openings. We generally hire new student specialists during summer for the Fall Term. Occasionally we have a smaller hiring for the Spring Term.

  • This is a joint application for the Library, Online Student Support desk, and Tutoring and Learning Center.

Based on your application materials, the library may invite you for an interview.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS: 

Library Student Specialists support the library in numerous ways. In addition to staffing our circulation desk, student specialists create display cases, manage our social media accounts, shelve books, and process new books. Online Student Support Specialists staff the library's first floor Open Access Lab and the Online Student Support desk. These students circulate items in our equipment lending collection, assist with technology issues, and answer general questions online and in-person. Tutors and Course Embedded Tutors (CET) provide academic support to students online and in person. Tutors help reinforce information learned by students as well as assist with the refining of study skills. The Math and Science Center offers tutoring on a drop by basis. The Writing Center offers online appointments as well as drop in tutoring.

Applicants must be:

  • Full-time students -- 12 unit minimum for most students
  • Available to work during hours the LL is open (Monday-Friday *hours may vary)
  • Reliable -- can be counted on to show up on time and meet your commitments
  • Diligent and self-motivated -- eager to make things better and able do so without always needing direction from others
  • Ready and able to learn -- consistently seeking to build knowledge and skills, and quick to absorb new ideas and information
  • Empathetic and service-oriented -- able to perceive people’s needs and feelings and committed to providing help
  • Effective communicators -- able to listen (and read) for deep understanding, and able to share information in ways that others can easily understand

Not required, but helpful:

  • Federal Work Study or other employment subsidies. Check with the financial aid office.
  • Scheduling flexibility and exceptional availability during hard-to-fill hours
  • Previous paid work experience, volunteer work, or other experience demonstrating significant, sustained reliability and responsibility
  • Previous experience in libraries, computer labs, tutoring centers, reception desks, customer service, or other relevant environments
  • Strong computer and technical skills
